Collections at Hengistbury Head
Over a century of research, records, and archives – all in one place.
Scientific records
We collect a wide range of scientific data on our wildlife, habitat and weather from our on-site station. These records guide how we manage the reserve for both people and nature. Some datasets will soon be available to download online. In the meantime, please contact us for access.
Archaeology and history
Our collections span from the Late Upper Palaeolithic to the 20th century. Key artifacts are on display in the Archaeology Gallery at the Visitor Centre, and the full collection is available to students and researchers by appointment.
We’re currently digitising archaeological material from Oxford University’s 1980s–90s excavations, on loan from the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum.

Archives
Our archives include:
- Excavation reports from the early 1900s to 2001
- Historical and modern photographs
- Maps and plans dating back to the 16th century
- Bournemouth Borough Council management plans from the 1970s
- Student research projects (A-level to PhD), mostly focused on natural history
If you have historical images of Hengistbury Head or our other reserves, we’d love to hear from you.
Natural history
We hold over 30 years of records on butterflies, moths, and other fauna, including recent reintroductions like the Natterjack Toad and Sand Lizard. The site’s flora is also well documented – with a quarter of the UK’s plant species recorded here.

Student projects
Student research forms a vital part of our archive. These projects offer valuable data and inspiration for future studies. Access is available by appointment.
Working with Russell-Cotes
We’re proud to be digitising the full archaeological collection from the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, now housed in our purpose-built artefact store.
Study stations and online access
Our website and two on-site study stations will soon provide digital access to our collections. Check back regularly for updates.
Donations and legacy
If you’d like to donate materials or remember us in your will, please get in touch.
Birdlife archives from the Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group (CHOG)
The CHOG has monitored birdlife in the harbour since 1956. Visit their website for daily sightings and insights into this nationally recognised migration hotspot.
