A bit of history
The Hengistbury Head land train first set off on 1st April 1968, launched by Roger and Joyce Faris, who paid £750 for a six-month trial. Despite early controversy - locals protested the restriction of road access for beach hut users - the aim was to protect the natural beauty of the Head, now a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The train faced a rocky start, including vandalism just days after launch, when roofing nails were scattered on the track, causing eight punctures. But the service endured. By November 1968, plans were in place to upgrade the train with better carriages and a shelter at Mudeford.
The Faris family ran the train for 45 years, creating cherished memories for generations. Joyce retired in 2015. Today, the service is proudly operated by BCP Council, continuing the legacy with the much-loved Dunlin (green), Mallard (orange) and Shelduck (blue) trains.
