Garden Thoughts in the time of Covid - Blog 1

Posted on: 27/01/2021

It seems mid winter is upon us and nature continues to show the hope and promise we need. She continues to grow, in spite of rain, and while some things will perish in the frost of winter others are still blooming or pushing up through the soil. Here are some of our ‘meanderings’ based on our love of gardens and wildlife. Sue.

During December and January I have looked after my houseplants and enjoyed the seed catalogues. Both are a welcome relief in lockdown. I did sow some Agapanthus in late November and you can see from the picture below that they are doing OK. I just took the seed from my sister’s plants. I sowed a few seeds on Sunday; parsley, carnations, salad leaves aubergines and antirrhinums (snapdragon sounds nicer). I don’t expect these all to be successful. I have thought of buying a little heated propagator. Has anyone used one? Margaret.

Hi Sue, I would like to tell you about the Buzzard for the blog. I’ve done most of my gardening recently at the allotment as it is so peaceful up there and there’s so much to do. There are regular sparrows and robins in the hedge, which forms the border to the farmer’s field. I hear the buzzard before I see it - that haunting call, so primeval. The birds scatter and if I walk down my path, away from the Blackthorn/ Hawthorn hedge, I sometimes see the buzzard skirting the hedge and as he approaches closer, he has to tilt his wings like a huge aeroplane. This displays his beautiful undercarriage to me with those gorgeous circular markings on his wing tips. It is a moment of sheer awe for me and complete terror for the tiny birds and mammals. He loves hunting in that field. Liz
